### Math Dictionary for Kids and Giveaway

Math Dictionary for Kids:
The Essential Guide to Math Terms, Strategies, and Tables
by Theresa R. Fitzgerald

I recently was very fortunate to get a copy of the newly released, 2011 edition, of Math Dictionary for Kids through Prufrock Press.  This two hundred plus page, full color edition, is jam packed with every vocabulary word and definition that is prevalent in our math curriculum.

The vocabulary/definition portion of the book is separated into math categories such as geometry, measurement, algebraic ideas, statistics and so on.  Each section is color coded and has a pretty thorough list of words that students, in grades ranging from mid-elementary to early high school, would encounter.  Each word contains the definition and if necessary an example and illustration.

The book goes above and beyond a typical dictionary.  By far my favorite features are in the back sections which include; the Quick Reference Guide, Formulas, Table and Charts, and Measurement Conversion Tables.  The Tables and Charts section has several different charts ranging from factors of numbers, fractions/decimals/percents to square roots. Whereas the Quick Reference Guide features strategies and algorithms students may need to know.  When I reading these sections, my teacher light bulb went on thinking about how I was going to use these sections during specific math units.

I definitely can see this book being utilized in the classroom but where I see the need for this book is at home.  Year after year I take part in the same conversation during fall conferences.  Parents express their frustration, because they are having a hard time with all the new math terms and strategies. They would love to help their child, but are learning it as their child is learning it.  This math dictionary would definitely serve as a great reference for both student and parent in and out of the classroom.

On occasion, when working with your guided math groups, you might not have that second to answer students' questions on what something means.  This dictionary would help greatly with answering student questions before they come to you, thus minimizing interruptions during your guided group time.

If you are interested and want more information you can find this dictionary here through Prufrock Press.

Are you ready to say goodbye to summer and hello to a new school year?

Happy Entering and Good Luck!

1. I am ready to say goodbye to summer and hello to a new school year. I am so nervous as this will be my first year as a classroom teacher, teaching multiage, and 4th and 5th. I was ready two weeks ago when I was offered a job, but the school is being remodeled and I can't access my classroom until 2 weeks before school, which is nerve racking. With that said I am so thrilled for the opportunity and to teach guided math!

2. It is bittersweet! I do love my summer and the time to rejuvinate, clean, and of course spend time with my 3 children (14,12 & 4)! I enjoy the workshops that get me thinking of the great changes that need to be made to make my classroom an even better place for students to be successful!
I will teach math to my 3rd graders this year, I was the Language Arts teacher for the last 3 years and my portable partner was the Math teacher! With that said I am looking forward to teaching guided math and math work stations!

3. I am now in that summer break beginning of the school year transition phase. I have had a jam packed fun filled summer with my boys and I am also anxious to implement several changes in my classroom this coming school year.

That math dictionary looks awesome. I teach 7th grade math and I really want to focus on literacy this school year.

4. I have already started getting my school brain ready... however, that does not mean I am ready for summer to be over! :)

5. I am never ready to say goodbye to summer, because it means that I can't spend as much time with my 2 and a half year old daughter. But, at the same time I am ready to go back to school. I've worked all summer making Math Work Stations and am excited to see how Math goes for me this year!

Becky

6. The beginning of the school year is happy and sad for me - because I lost my job last school year and miss my colleagues and students dearly. However, I am excited to start the school year with a new team! :)

7. Definitely bittersweet! I'm ready to get back in a routine, but I also like being able to sleep in and hang out in PJs! :)

8. I am so ready to to say goodbye to summer and hello to the new year because I love all the excitement from the kids and fellow teachers. I will miss playing with my daughter all day long:(

9. I am ready to say goodbye to summer, or what is passing as 'summer' here in the Pacific Northwest, and say HELLO to a new school year! My two youngest are headed into junior high and 5th grade respectively, while I finish my last year of college (BA Psychology!)...Having also started a new job (paralegal in a law firm) I am looking forward to the cool fall days which heralds the holiday season...my favorite time of year!!

10. I am moving to a new grade this year, so while I am extremely excited, I'm definitely NOT ready for the school year to begin! I need another 2 months of summer so I can prepare. :)

11. I am never ready to say goodbye to summer! As a parent, I so welcome the summer break for my kids and our household! My kids have so much homework during the school year, and even though they have some summer homework, too, it's nothing like the work during the year, and I am so happy for their break from the grind.

12. I am half ready to end the summer and begin a new year. I love being home with my own children but sure do miss the classroom!

13. I am ready to start the year, but am not "ready" to get up and drive to school in the traffic.

As I am supposed to be teaching a new level this year, it is almost like being a "new" teacher. I still have the feeling of being "new" every school year. I haven't taught 4th grade in more years than I care to admit, so it is all brand new to me.

14. I am ready to start a new school year! I keep telling myself when the day comes that I am not ready, I need to stop teaching...

The best part of summer for me is the part of my day when I don't have 200 things to do. I never have this during the school year. I still work a lot on school stuff during the year, but the pressure is different.

Hope that you have a good school year, too!

15. I am so ready for the fall! :) My summer classes end today (I'm in grad school), and I am definitely ready for them to be over. Not to mention, I'm ready to get out of this heat!

This book looks awesome! Thanks for the giveaway!

16. I am ready to say goodbye to summer already. I have a new grade level to look forward to teaching (5th) and I'm really excited about it. This would be the perfect addition to our classroom library!

17. I am ready to say goodbye to summer and hello to a new school year! Even though I will miss sleeping late, I am excited to meet my news kids and have a great year.

Once Upon A Teaching Blog

18. I will miss getting to sleep late but I am ready to get back into a routine. I'm anxious to meet my kids & their parents. One week until I get to meet them!

19. I am looking forward to school, but I am enjoying the break. I'm super motivated to get in my room and organize thanks to all the wonderful ideas I have picked up on teaching blogs! :)

20. No, I love relaxing around and playing in the sun. Yes, because I am so excited to put to use all the great ideas I have found this summer.

dawniekens@aol.com

21. I teach in a year-round school, so I went back to school July 1! I'm enjoying your blog, and hoping to find plenty of management ideas to implement guided math in my second grade classroom. Thanks!

Jennifer

22. I am so excited about going back to school, but maybe not exactly ready to say goodbye to summer yet!! :)

I love using Guided Math and Math Centers in my classroom. I've used them for 3 years now and I can't imagine going back to whole group instruction (or as I like to remember it- pulling out my hair, running around from desk to desk math time!)

The dictionary sounds awesome!

23. Where does the summer go?? I actually look forward to a new school year and all the things I'm excited to do. Of course I have too many things on my mind at once because, well I can't implement it until school starts!! I'm very excited for math work stations, my new classroom, and my many new ideas off pinterest! So as much as I enjoy my summer, it's always nice to get back into the swing of things at school!
Stacee

24. I love relaxing in the summer and am on my last family vacation of the summer. When I return I will be in full school mode. I have 2 days of workshops next week and with those and all the great things I have found on others blogs and put the finishing touches on my room and beginning planning!

25. I hate summer to end but am anticipating a new school year even after over 30 years of teaching. I always compare it to Christmas. You prepare and worry until the first day is school is finally here!!!

26. I had a summer full of recuperation from surgery, and planning for the new school year. I am not sure my mind really left school completely! But I am anticipating the new adventure of a new team and departmentalizing this year, teaching 3rd grade math all day long!!!! This book sounds exactly like the resource that could help my classroom.

27. I am ready to say good-bye to summer, and start the school year. I have been itching to get in my classroom and start setting up. I'm excited to be the Math/Science teacher for our team again this year. We showed a ton of growth last year on our end-of-grade tests in Math, and I'm excited for the challenge to up that percentage even more. I've been working hard all summer to come up with great tools, techniques, and stations for my students to use during math. We do weekly Math vocabulary, so this dictionary would be great for my students to use!

28. I am ready to say good-bye to summer and hello to routine. I will miss getting up late, but it's nice to see everyone and feel all the excitement of a new year. I wish everyone good luck! I am also very excited to finish my graduate degree - this year will be a great one!
-Nicole (Colorful Teaching)

29. I taught summer school so I have not had much of a vacation, but I am ready and excited to get back to teaching. I have been working a little every day getting things ready. Have to admit that I have been spending too much money on TPT and creating my own. Can't wait to use everything with my kids.

30. Yes and no! I am excited about the new school year, my new ideas, the routine, and the new kids coming. But I will not enjoy fighting my night owl tendencies. And I will really miss that sweet feeling on a Sunday night knowing I don't have to get up and go to work in the morning!

31. I have mixed feelings about back to school... although I love summer and hate to see it end, I'm excited for a new year! I'm in my 3rd year as an elementary education major, so I'll be doing a lot of practice teaching which will be fun! ~Hannah

32. I love, love summers......and grandkids! But I am excited about moving to 1st from 3rd. And besides, it has been sooooo hot here in Texas that I am ready for school which I hope and PRAY the fall begins buckets and buckets of rain and cool weather. http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/08/02/texas.town.drought/

33. This is my first "back to school" so I have very mixed feelings about it. While I am excited that my little guy is starting preschool, I am very sad to not have him all to myself anymore. It is going to be an adjustment, but I am sure after a few weeks we will get into a routine and I will enjoy the 9 hours a week I get to give my full attention to my toddler.

34. I AM ready to say good-bye to summer, because my baby is due on Teacher Workshop day!!! I won't be back to school until the start of the 2nd quarter, but my classroom is ready to go for my long term sub:)

35. I am ready for school time! I have been working in my room the past couple of weeks and start next week. I think that the math dictionary looks really neat! I hope I win.

36. Not yet. I've had to be in the classroom for the first 3 weeks of vacation, so I'd like another couple before I buckle down. Luckily, I have that!

37. Hi, Mary! I actually am excited to say goodbye to summer and embrace the school year. I heard I am going to have an incredible class this year, and I am thinking about all kinds of creative things I can do with them. Besides that, it has been a difficult summer; I injured my foot at the end of the school year and my father was in the ICU to heal from a life-altering accident. I think circumstances have caused me to realize that life is precious. Of course I still had awesome "me time" towards the end of the summer by going to Walt Disney World for a few days (and a lot of sleep, and watching Cake Boss), but it was incredible fun when I began setting up my classroom last week as well.

I have had a blog for a while, but I just joined Blogspot three days ago. :) I am very much enjoying connecting with new people. I teach fourth grade in Florida.

Victoria

38. I'm teetering between being ready to say good-bye to summer, and being not quite ready to let go. I've still got summery plans in me (beach trips, out of state trips, books to read while hanging out on my balcony) but I'm getting that itch to get into my classroom and start getting ready. Though, I am totally ready for fall weather and jeans and sweaters! Capris and shorts just don't make me as happy!;)

39. My brain is ready but my classroom is not! I was just able to go into my room on Monday and we start on the 16th, so I have been working hard in my room. I just started tackling my library today... that was definitely a project!! :)

Marvelous Multiagers!

41. I am ready to start living my lifelong dream! I am a new teacher and can't wait for that first day to begin! :)

42. Bittersweet :/ I will miss the lazy days of summer...sitting by the pool with my kids, traveling, and those famous PJ's and reading days but since I will be taking a leap and going after my Master's this year, I am ready to get things started!!! I'm also looking forward to some free classroom time with my kids =)

This book looks AMAZING!!!! Thanks for sharing!

43. Very ready!!! First FULL year of teaching!

44. I'm ready to say hello to a new group of students and see what the year has in store but not ready to say goodbye to the carefree days of summer or to start taking my babies to daycare again!

45. I am sooo thrilled to start this school year. 2 years ago I taught 1st grade and now I'm in third grade so I will get some of the same sweet kiddos again! However, I am bummed, sadened, and really not ready to say goodbye to summer. I just got married this summer, took a honeymoon, moved in with my hubbie and started DIY projects galore. BOOOOOO!!! I so wish I had just a few more weeks of summer left so we can get our lives organized!:)

46. WOW! This book sounds awesome - thank you for sharing!

Yes I am ready to say goodbye to summer. I am beyond excited for what this year has to offer! I will be entering my 2nd year of teaching {can't believe how time flies}. I will also be wrapping up my Masters degree in Educational Technology! Plus the kids that I will be getting this year, are the ones I student taught 2 years ago! Love it!!

The Sweet Life of Third Grade

47. Yes and no...I will not be returning to work until November since I will be staying home with my son that was born this summer. So, the new mommy in me is not ready to go back and is thankful for the extra time off. The teacher in me is ready for the challenges this year is brining. New building, new 5th grade team, new start time (45 mins earlier!), new students. Bring it on!

48. I am scared (starting a new position) and excited! Can't wait to see what the new year brings!

49. I definitely have mixed feelings. Don't want my summer break to end, but I am excited about meeting my new students and share my love of learning with them.

50. I am totally ready to say good bye to summer!! It's been just me and the dogs, and I can't wait to be busy again! Cabin fever has definitely set it. I am excited to meet my new kiddos, and get the year going! And...I am super excited for it to be time to wear winter clothes again! Peacoats, here I come!

51. I just went to my classroom yesterday and it was messy and dusty, going back today to starting cleaning! Summer has been a blast, but I have lots of new ideas and I'm ready to try them. This will be my 21st year in the classroom and I feel surprisingly energized!

52. I am not ready to go back to school! I am moving into a brand new building this year (hoot hoot) but can't start setting up my room until next Monday! I love being home with my girls. I get to be a stay-at-home mom for 10 weeks. I enjoy gathering ideas and planning for instruction during the summer and I'm just not done yet! I need more time!!

53. I am not ready for summer to end yet! I love the change of pace that summer offers. The time with my family and the time to search for ideas, catch my breath and organize myself. Discovering this world of blogs has been such an amazing inspiration, so I am getting closer. Now if I could just get into my classroon. :) Asbestos removal is keeping us out but truthfully I am nervous about going back in after this type of project!

54. It's always bittersweet, but I'm ready for the excitement and challenges of the new year. As much as we love summer relaxation, even my daughters (12 & 8) are ready to go back!

Thanks for the giveaway opportunity...the book looks great!

55. I am ready for the new school year. This will be my second year teaching 3rd grade Math & Science. I am excited for a new group of kids and lots of math! I was able to get back in my classroom yesterday to decorate so I am so anxious to get this year started!

56. I am not ready for the end of summer! I have enjoyed the time with my family. However, I love my students and can't wait to get back into teaching. I have so many ideas and look forward to implementing them.

57. I am SO not ready for the summer to end!
First, I don't want my oldest to start middle school just yet. I like him being home with us so much. And secondly, it's been so hot to be outside, we didn't do any of the outside activities we've planned on the last day of school back in June.

58. We haven't even started summer! Our weather is just finally beginning to move out of spring!!! No way!!! Let's have a do-over ;)

59. Am I ready? Not yet! But I agree with this quote...

60. I have two more days of summer left but I am always eager to get back to school. I teach middle school math and there is never a dull moment. I am also looking forward to creating my own blogspot after exploring blogs all summer long!

61. Hi there! just found your blog! I am excited to say hello to a new school year- I had been cut from my school due to numbers and placed at a school further away, but over the summer got the word that I can stay at my school- so happy! I am going to teach 4th instead of 3rd, but thrilled nonetheless!

62. I am definitely excited to say hello to the new school year! I have 2 new team members that I love and I am staying self-contained in 3rd grade!! 66. I am totally not ready to say good bye to summer yet. I spent a lot of my time getting ready for my sister's wedding. but in a way i am excited because i get a new group of smiling faces

67. I am so sad to see the summer go. I have loved being home with my 5 kids and I'm starting a new adventure. I am opening a new school (that isn't done yet) plus usually I just teach 5th grade but this year I'm teaching a 5/6 split. Besides I have used this dictionary before and I love it.

68. After this week that includes one last vacay I'll be ready. After a non renewed contract in the spring due to state budget cuts, I am SO grateful to have a position back in the classroom! Bring on the kids, paper and long nights scouring the Internet!

74. I think I officially took a "break" from teaching for one week while I was on vacation. Otherwise, I have been thinking about the new school year nearly every day. I am ready to go back because I love the structure, but I am still trying to sleep in as much as possible and soak up the sun as long as I can!

75. I always get excited about the school year once August comes along. July is our month for decompressing and relaxing, but August is my time to prepare for the new school year and begin to implement all of the new things I am excited to try.
Since I am looping, I am trying to change things up for my students and we are starting Math Workshop, structured like the Daily 5. It should be an interesting, but effective change. This dictionary would be great! Thanks so much for the contest....

80. I am not ready just yet to say goodbye to the summer. I have enjoyed spending time with my soon-to-be Kindergartener. :) I do however anticipate having a great year! It will be nice having my son at my school too.

81. Although I am not ready to say goodbye to summer as yet, I am ready to meet my new kiddos. I got a puppy, Bailey in April and I have been enjoying spending time with him. This summer I decided to revamp my classroom so I've been spending a lot of time up at school. Bailey has become quite acclaimated to my classroom that I am thinking about training him to be a therapy dog. If he gets his certificate he can come and listen to my kids read!!!!
