A Geometry Scavenger Hunt

The other day I told my third graders they were about to go on a scavenger hunt.  Immediately I had gasps of excitement, even before they knew what they going to do.  I broke up my third graders into groups of three, I only had 6 third graders that day. I gave each group 8 minutes each. One group out in the hall at a time. I gave them a timer that was set and told them they had to be back when the timer goes off.

I then gave the group my camera.  I told them they have 8 minutes to find things in the building that show parallel lines, intersecting lines and right angles. Their job was to take a picture of as many examples as they could find.  The kids took their job very seriously, writing down on notebook paper exactly what they had to find and off the first group went.

I was very excited to see what they would come back with and couldn't help but to sneak a peak at what the first group had found before the next group set off.

I have to say it was a very successful, fun activity.  The kids loved it, I loved seeing the building from their perspective.  I put the pictures up on the Smartboard and had each group present what they had found.   My next step is to print off the pictures and create a collage to display out in the hall.  I thought I would share with you some of my favorite pictures they had taken.

Math Using Dominoes - Domino Parking Lot

Have you ever been on It is a great website where you can find a variety of math activities.  I found a whole section of great domino number sense activities on Math Wire and knew I had to share.

The one I like is called, Domino Parking Lot.  In this activity students use a regular set of dominoes.  They take turns selecting a domino, count the number of dots, and then place it on a parking spot.

The good news is that they have the playing sheets already created and ready for free download.

2D Shape Posters

I created a set of very basic 2D shape posters for you tonight.  These would make a great addition to any early childhood or primary classroom (or maybe some intermediate).

These posters would make a great addition to your math word wall.  They feature triangle, pentagon, octagon, circle, square, rectangle and hexagon.

Here is a preview of the posters...

Math Game- Racing Rectangles

Racing Rectangles

Racing Rectangles is a game that can help reinforce arrays and multiplication.  Students, working in pairs, take turns rolling two dice.  Each student must choose a different colored marker or crayon to use.  The student outlines and fills in a rectangle that matches what they rolled.

For example, if the student rolled a 4 and 3, that student would fill in a 4x3 rectangle on the grid.  The player then writes the total number of squares inside the rectangle.

A player loses a turn when his or her rectangle cannot fit on the game board.  Play continues back and forth until neither player can't draw a rectangle.

Students count up their total of squares they colored.
The winner is the one with the highest number of squares filled in.

Here is an example of what a game board might look like...

Math Game- Addition Cross Out

Addition Cross Out

Here is another great game from KidsCount1234.  Students take turns rolling two dice.  They add the two sums together and then cross that number out on their game sheet.  The last person to cross out a number is the winner!

There is a lower level, counting version of this game also... Check out the website to get the printout.
